Uzbekistan will host the 65th session of the UNWTO European Regional Commission

The next 65th session of the European Commission of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) will be held in Samarkand, the event will be opened by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Chairman of the State Committee for Tourism Development Aziz Abdukhakimov.

The decision was made within the framework of the proposal sent by the State Committee for Tourism Development to the UNWTO Secretariat to hold the 65th session of the European Commission in 2020 in Samarkand.

The event scheduled for June 24-25, 2020 in Samarkand is planned for the participation of more than 300 members of delegations from ministries and departments in the direction of tourism and adjoining regions from more than 40 countries, as well as holding a conference together with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, it was decided to hold this event online. The main theme of the event is aimed at the impact of the pandemic on tourism and overcoming its consequences.

The event will be opened by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Chairman of the State Committee for Tourism Development Aziz Abdukhakimov. Also speaking at the meeting will be UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili, Chairman of the Regional Commission - Minister of Tourism of Greece Garry Theocharis, Director of the European Department Alissandra Priante. The online event will include cross-sectoral discussions on COVID-19 Response Policy, UNWTO and International Finance Corporation presentations on Green Instrument.

The event will also discuss the issue of holding the next 66th meeting in full format. Uzbekistan is expected to be re-nominated as host.

For information: In 1975, 6 regional commissions were formed as subsidiary bodies of the UNWTO General Assembly. As a rule, the commissions are collected once a year. The purpose of the meeting of the commission is to strengthen relations between the participating countries, as well as in the intervals between meetings of the General Assembly to address proposals and problems of regional countries to the secretariat. Between sessions of the General Assembly, each commission elects its own chairman and vice-chairman from among the participating States for a period of two years. 42 countries located in Europe and Central Asia are considered to be members of the European Regional Commission. Greece currently chairs the European Regional Commission (CEU - Commission for Europe of UNWTO). Moldova, Poland and Serbia are vice chairs.

Session history.

The 63rd meeting of the European Commission took place on 11-13 June 2018 in Prague, Czech Republic. 64th meeting was held on May 27-30, 2019 in Zagreb, Croatia. The meeting discussed the main issues of the participants in the European Region. At the next meeting of the General Assembly, held in St. Petersburg on September 9-13, 2019, the issues of joining the approved work plan of the organization for 2020-21 were considered.
